2017 Year in Review

A couple of days ago I downloaded all of my pictures and videos from my iPhone and my iPad into my desktop computer for storage, and freed up space on my other devices.  In so doing, I realized that Paul and I had been a lot of places in 2017...so easily forgotten.  So today, as I have patience, I am going to try and capture some of those 2017 scenes in this blog of reviewing my 2017.  Here goes....

Sitting at my desk in my study, listening to good Christian music from KHYM, a station out of Kansas, and having munchies to boost my energies...I am ready for a stroll down memory's lane.  I no longer keep photo albums, but just store the pictures and videos on my computer.  Using blogs or Facebook posts that put them into some sort of order provides me my "albums" to look back through.

So the picture of my husband and me (and I don't age pretty...but I am honest and sincere...good traits to have..."she has a great personality") is from our first trip together in 2017.  We went to St. Louis and picked up our son and two granddaughters, and headed to Myrtle Beach.  You can see the pictures from that trip in an earlier blog about Spring Break.

For several years we have had the privilege of taking our granddaughters on trips during their spring break, but now that our oldest granddaughter has graduated, that may be difficult.  Her life with two jobs, a boyfriend, college...whatever...is going to be full!  We'll see what the future holds.  We've been very privileged, but these times...they are a-changing!  Anyone with grandchildren understands that well!

Sunset on that era...return trip....what a terrific vacation it was!!  It was special to have our son along with us on this trip!

Our next trip was a business trip for Paul, and the dogs and I tagged along.  We stopped in St. Louis and recalled some of the memories we made there...driving past some of our previous homes...homes where we still had our two teenage, much loved,  sons, who graduated school and left way too quickly!!  And what's a trip to St. Louis without stopping at Ted Drew's on Route 66...

We spent two weeks in Wichita, Kansas...an area we had not been in before.  I just found out this week a piece of trivia....Pizza Hut was started in Wichita in 1958 by two brothers.  Coke gave them an inverted triangle sign that had room enough for five letters in the top word and three letters in the bottom word.  Thus, Pizza Hut!  And of course, you know, they serve Coke products!!!
Wichita is a nice area...but I especially liked historic Old Town, in the Old West setting, on the Arkansas River.

Our first son made a major move this year also...leaving behind California and moving back to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Since we were only nine hours from him when we were in Kansas, we added to our trip and went to visit him.  That's another great location on Route 66.  If you ever get there, be sure and go to the Route 66 Diner.  It has all the neon and deco of the 1950's era, and a menu to match!

Also, Old Town is an historic place to visit.  Hand made jewelry is sold on blankets placed on the sidewalks.  The town is set in a square around a park.  Old churches there are very interesting.

On our way back to Michigan, we stopped in St. Louis again for our first granddaughter's graduation.  She is surrounded by family who are so very proud of her and love her so much!

When our younger granddaughter celebrated her birthday in November, we were back in St. Louis again for this special event.  During that visit we took time to visit Historic Main Street in St. Charles, MO, the first capital of Missouri.  It still has the brick streets, and lots of unique little shops, and restaurants galore.  A fun place to visit!

We had planned to spend our winter in Tennessee again this year, but as it turned out we are still in Michigan  My husband is having some intensive treatments on his eyes that require us to stay here, if we want insurance to help us out.  So in between treatments we found a window of time where we could make a trip to Hilton Head Island for a week, and took full advantage of it!

We headed down through Charleston, WV, where we spent our first night.  That called for a few bridges and tunnels on our way.  And we gassed our vehicle near the Capital.

We were headed south the same time as Atlanta, North Carolina, and Virginia were getting heavy winter storms.  Unusual for their areas at that time.  We had some pretty sights along the way.  Felt like we were driving down Christmas Tree Lane when we got into North Carolina.

Hilton Head Island was experiencing cooler weather also...mostly in the 50's or low 60's  But we knew it was better than what was happening back in Michigan!!  This sunrise greeted us our first morning there.  And we were reminded of where we were...Low Country...by this sign.

We had a view of the ocean and the sunset from our room.  We stayed in the Marriott Monarch Resort, and come to find out...it was the first resort built on Hilton Head Island in the early 1980's.  In fact, it was the beginning of a new kind of vacation lodging.  Marriott quickly snatched it up in 1984 as their introduction into resort time shares.  They now have eight resorts on Hilton Head Island, and many more around the US and the world, but this is the original one.  I found it very interesting to be in part of the history of the island.

Most of you know I like to get out and walk by the ocean every morning.

It was definitely cooler, and I had to wear a jacket, hat, and gloves.  But by midday it was nice enough to go visit the sites in our shirt sleeves or light jacket.  The sun shone every day.  In the last year, Hilton Head Island has had two major hurricanes where they had to vacate the whole island.  Don't recall how many trees the island lost, but our resort alone lost 123.  They had things cleaned up very well, and one would hardly know they had been hit, except for some reconstruction areas.  The staff I spoke with told me until this last year, the island had never been totally evacuated, so you know these were two tough hurricanes (Matthew and Irma).

We went down to the South Island end one day, a place we had not visited before (this was our third HHI trip in the last 10 years).  It was more like a little fishing village.

Another day was spent in Harbour Town in Sea Pines.

There was always plenty to do right at the resort, and we enjoyed just relaxing most of the time.  We did not use the pool, but we ate by the pool one day.  Such a pretty site.  There was a pool table, ping pong table, and Foosball on the rocking chair veranda.  Also shuffleboard courts down by the fire pit.  And pretty pathways to walk.

And always the sunrises and sunsets.

We took a different route back home.  We had never been to Helen, Georgia, the Bavarian town in the northern Georgia mountains.  We spent a night there, walking the small village and seeing the Christmas lights.  We dined at Cowboys and Angels.  Good steak and potato meal!!

The next day we drove on through the mountains into Murphy, North Carolina, and then along the rapids of the Ocoee River, leading us to Cleveland, Tennessee.

When we got back home, our girls (dogs) and bears were all glad to see us!  As well as Mr. Moose, who kept everyone in line!

We celebrated Christmas 2017 with Paul's family...those who lived in Michigan.  We went to see a funny movie, had dinner in a steak house, and then took them to the mall.  Paul's parents rode the double decker merry-go-round, and went to see Santa!  What a great day for the memory book!!

Now we wrap up 2017, hunkering down in front of our fireplace on New Year's Eve with a temperature of 1 degree, feels like -8 degrees, outside.  We've had a week of snow (nothing like Erie, PA!!), but it's cold enough that even the girls are ready to come in after a couple of minutes outside.

WISHING YOU ALL A
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

2018 Devotional Reading

I was pleased this morning to have completed reading the Daily Bible in Chronological Order...one of the two devotional readings I chose to read during 2017.  It was my third time through the Bible in such a manner...1988, 2010, and 2017.  I sometimes get buried in the Old Testament scriptures, and am relieved when I start into the New Testament.  When I finish reading the Bible through in one year, I say to myself...that's the last time I'm going to do that!  But...I like to think that God directs me in my devotional choices.  I also completed my reading of A. F. Harper's God Speaks...which was the third time through that book also.  Both of those books are now in my give away bin.

I journal...still.  I start out with my morning devotions, writing down what I am reading that day (book, chapter, page, etc).  Then, as I read, when I see something that I've previously highlighted, or something that just seems to jump out at me, I write those words in my journal.  Two reasons.  Maybe someday some relative of mine may decide to read through the journals of my life, and there will be words of encouragement for them...or something that spoke to me will also speak to them.  Second reason...maybe someday we will have all of our Bibles confiscated, should the Lord tarry and the enemy make his advances of wiping out Christianity.  If that were to happen, God forbid, I know I can go back to my journals from across the years and find scripture that speaks to me...God's words to me.

This past year I have been in a small group Bible study with a group of ten women at the church we currently attend...Pathfinder United Methodist Church.  Our group leader is a Spirit led woman who encourages us to put our "God goggles" on and see life from His perspective.  One of the books she often referenced is Sparkling Gems from the Greek, Volume 1.  Having studied Greek in my college and seminary years, and occasionally trying to refresh myself in the language, I decided that was the book I wanted to get and use for my 2018 devotional material.  You will now find it listed in the side bar under "Books I Am Currently Reading".  I look forward to delving in tomorrow morning, January 1, 2018.

I like one book for heavy duty reading in my devotions, and one book for a short daily encouragement.  I picked up a large print edition of The Daily Devotion, at a book sale this past year.  It's never been used, and it's just one page for each day.

Perhaps from my daily reading I will find things to put on my blog as an encouragement, if indeed I go back to regular blogging.  So check back now and then!  Let's see what God might have to say to us this coming year as we look forward to the return of King Jesus!  I'm glad I don't depend on Fox News to encourage me, or Hallmark Movies...though I enjoy them both.  But I need a daily dose of focusing on what God wants me to know, to be aware of.  His Word is a living word...alive each day by the agency of His Holy Spirit in us.  I trust, dear readers, that you are tuned into Him!

Hello Mountain View Guest!

Thanks for faithfully checking my blog.  Coming into these long, cold, snowy winter days, once the holiday buzz is put away, I hope to be back...going through my files, posting from my writings.  I also have a post about our recent trip to Hilton Head Island, but that is on Facebook.  Send me a friend request, identifying who you are so I can determine if I will accept your friend request.

I wouldn't do Facebook for a long time, but I've been on it almost two years, and it truly is what keeps me from blogging.  But I'm a little weary of keeping up with everyone and everything that gets posted on FB, and think I would enjoy the solitude of blogging again.  Perhaps soon.

I'm Still Here!

I realize I have not blogged in several months.  I have been caught up in posting on Face Book and communicating in Messenger...and my desire to blog went on vacation.  I think I'm about to come back home and go back to blogging during the winter ahead, to help fill my hours.  Not sure what I'll be blogging about, but I sense a desire to come back to this hobby (I have so few!).

Thank you to those of you who have faithfully checked on my blog now and then.  I'm surprised you are still around!  Would love to know with whom I am having one sided communication, but that's just my curiosity.

I blog because I want to escape the four walls of my mind at times, and I know I can expose myself to the whole world this way.  I guess, however, I am more of a private person than I used to be, and I trust that helps me be more selective about what I blog.  Family pictures are now off limits, as I know my family doesn't care for the exposure.  So, maybe I'll turn to preaching in my blogs.  Who knows?  Maybe I'll be back soon!

Spring Break 2017 - Myrtle Beach

We had a wonderful week with our son and two granddaughters during their spring break.  We drove to St. Louis to spend the weekend, got a rental vehicle for the trip, loaded up and headed out to Myrtle Beach on Sunday, March 19th.  Kevin was the main driver, and since he had not had a vacation in a few years, we also made him the one who decided when to stop, where to eat, what activities we would partake in.  All we had to do was sit back and relax and enjoy the trip!  Paul sat up front with him, and was the relief driver.  Leia and I took the middle seat, and Aria was glad to have the back cubby hole to herself!  All the luggage was packed in around her...she's the only one who would have fit back there!

This is the first time Kevin has gone with us to Myrtle Beach, but it was the second trip for Leia and Aria.  It's always a scenic drive down through the Smokies as we head down I-40 from Knoxville to Ashville.

We checked into our resort, and were given a villa on the top floor - 16th floor - with some great views!!

Thus began five days of fun, food, and relaxation!

Sometimes we just had fun in the villa playing games.  We went outside to play shuffleboard and bocce ball.

We spent one day out at the ocean trying to fly helicopters.  Leia and Aria collected shells.  Aria and Kevin splashed around in the waves...and it never did get warm!  They were glad to go back to the heated pool where the water was 85 degrees!

Another day was a designated shopping day.  We went to Tanger Outlets and Barefoot Landing.  Lots of shopping bags went back to the villa with us, and most of the souvenir shopping was done.

Kevin offerd to make us a taco meal back at the villa, so we stopped by Walmart to get all the goodies we needed.  So nice to have someone else cook!!  And there always has to be a smart face or two in the group...your guess as to who!

Another day Kevin wanted to take the girls to the race track...so he and Aria got in one go-cart and Leia took her own...looks right at home, doesn't she!!  From there we went to play some miniature golf...Kevin, Aria, and I.

On our last full day in Myrtle Beach we opted to go to Broadway at the Beach...the largest outdoor shopping, eating, entertainment mecca in Myrtle Beach.  The two men were so good to wait on the girls while we shopped.  But they did their share of shopping also!

Broadway at the Beach is situated around a lake, with bridges crossing from one side to the other.  In the picture above the gang is feeding the fish.  In the picture below, the fish are waiting for their handouts!!

Our last morning there.  The sun rises...view from our villa.  Kevin and the girls stepped out on the balcony one last time to say good-bye.  It's been a great week!!  The picture of the pool is from our 16th floor villa..and. the two dots in the pool are Kevin and Aria on our last night there...after we got back from Broadway at the Beach.  While they were at the pool, Leia was walking the beach one last time.

We left on Saturday morning and drove back to Knoxville.  Introduced Kevin to Blaze Pizza.  He had introduced us to Firehouse Subs while in Myrtle Beach, as well as McAlister's Deli.  We had a couple of Chick-Fil-A stops on our trip, of course.

The Arch, of course, meant we were back in St. Louis, and the picture below shows our safe arrival back at Kevin's house.  The good guy in the white hat and the girls with their traveling buddies.  Grandma had to have one last splurge!

Myrtle Beach, we hope to return...you have been our favorite spring break get away!

Paul and I were so blessed to be able to have family with us this year.  Those times are rare and precious.  We thank our Heavenly Father for the safe trip and good family times!
